Why do survivors sometimes return to or stay with abusers?

Leaving an abusive relationship is a long and difficult process. Sometimes the survivor feels frightened about what the future could hold or feels ashamed of what has happened and is reluctant to seek help. There are also times when children are part of the relationship and the survivor feels scared for them, and doesn’t want to break up the family. While these are some of the reasons, they aren’t all.

What can you do to help a survivor?

While the first few days the survivor has left are the hardest, during this time, sometimes the survivor needs time. Reaching out and letting them know that you are there for them can provide tremendous relief, as well as believing the survivor and listening without judgement.
